I came across this very cool new research project from the Microsoft Live Labs and The University of Washington. The software basically transforms a series of standard photos of a specific location into a 3D map of that location and allows a user to navigate around the space in 3D to get a sense for the layout of the actual site.

The project is still in the R&D phase, so currently users cannot generate their own scenes from their photo content, but one can browse from the existing sets they have available. Click the link and press ‘1′ to start an automatic tour, or just click around to see the layout photo by photo in the 3D space! :)
