A Din’go ayte my steak! (Frazer Isle, Oz)
January 11th, 2002Gidday Again,
I am now in Noosa, Qeensland, AU, working my way down the Gold Coast towards Brisbane and Sydney. The Summer is hot and sunny, the people friendly (despite the used-car salesman smarm of most travel agents) and the traveling is a blast.
I just got back from a great off-road camping trip on Frazer Island, which is the largest all sand island in the world (>75 miles long). Somehow the vegetation has evolved to grow in sand there and there are massive rainforests, adjacent to giant pure white silica sand dunes, fresh water lakes (including The most beautiful beach in Oz - I’ll send photos soon when I find a cafe with a post ‘95 computer setup…) and massive stretches of beaches. The best way to see the island is to rent a 4×4 Land Cruiser and camping equipment from the hostel and join a group of 9 travelers for a self-guided adventure tour, trail blazing along the beaches, through the inland sand tracks and around the rainforests.
