Gettin’ Down, Down Under (Queensland, Oz)
December 24th, 2001Gidday Mates,
Greetings from Townsville/Magnetic Island, North-Queensland, Australia (about 4 hrs South of Cairns). I just got here today from Cairns and hope to do a day of wreck diving on the Yangala Wreck, which is an old ship that sank during a cyclone around 1911. It should be pretty sweet. For Xmas I was in Cape Tribulation, North Queensland, Australia (about 2 hrs north of Cairns). It was hot and humid there where the tropical rainforrest meets the South Pacific and the only white I saw this Christmas is the sand on the beach (I’m sure others saw a different type of white….). The guest house there was very sweet, amidst the jungle and it was filled with about 100+ travelers who were quite festive for the occasion at the giant Xmas dinner (several were busting santa costumes, hats or raindeer horns and some had a blow-up Santa). I am still in the North of Oz, so haven’t yet been to the South, to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, etc., but I will start to make my way down the coast after New Years. For New Years, I plan to make it to Airlai beach, which is kind of a traveler party center, so I hope to be up for the challenge. It can hard keeping up with the younger folk night after night in the pubs and discos, but I am sure I will manage….
